The game starts

About this post: Marathon Preparation, Barcelona Marathon, Christmas Races

Since my last post I’ve been mostly devoted on training for cross country and getting in shape for medium distance races. One month ago, just after my travel to Madrid I ran the International Cross of Granollers. It was an interesting test just after the travel to see how my shape was evolving. Result satisfactory: 3’17 minute km aprox. in a cross country race is a good pace (for a marathonian amateur runner).

Two weeks ago the real party of the season started: The preparation of the Barcelona Marathon. The first week was the previous to the classical Sant Silvestre race (typicall xmas race celebrated in many different places in Spain).  It is typical in my case that during these dates I’m two or three days sick. This year, yet another time, I was sick for couple of days. This affected my psychological and physical state and I could not run as I had planned (at the end 33 minutes in 10km).  It was a good training session though.  Here a picture with two my tanning mates Alex and Lluc before the race (promising guys of 800 and 1500 mts).

During the second week I’ve started accumulating kms and long interval training sessions. I ran about 140 kms: San Silvestre, series of 4kms, progressive run (2x10km 3'48'' and 3'30'')  and long runs at comfortable paces (around 4’10-4’15 mins km).

Important check this week: Nutrition. I went to visit Silva Tremoleda (@silviatremoleda) to double check what how I was eating during the day and how was my preparation and recovery of my tanning sessions. I discovered some interesting tips (for example: that milk with chocolate it’s a good recovery drink!).  Furthermore,  she made a dietary proposal based on my physical characteristics,  blood test and training planning. Honestly, this is very recommendable to avoid injuries, check that you eat all you need and your body ingests all it needs to have a good recovery before your sessions. Now I’m facing my training activities with more confidence than before.

Before finalize this entry I’d like to share  some of the basic tips that IMMO I would recommend to anyone preparing the marathon:
  • Depending on the number of kms you run (and how intensive they are) per week I would recommend one massage every other week or one at least per month.
  • Visit the doctor to double check that you are healthy enough to run the marathon and you don’t have any lack (i.e: vitamin B12).
  • If you really care about what you eat, how you prepare your running session and how you recover I would visit a nutritionist specialized in sport (like Silva). This can totally boost your performance.
  • Visit the cardiologist to double check you don’t have any pathology. In general I would recommend doing a run stress test. Avoid serious problems!
  • Visit the podiatrist. Again, if you have any unbalance in your body that can be avoided using an insole discovering it early will avoid injuries.
  • Ask for homeopathic+natural products to increase your body defences  This can help you to avoid flu or getting sick.  In my case I’ve been using Invergriphi and drinking orange+lemon juice every morning.  Be careful with the grapefruit! It disables the effect of some vitamins or medicine.
  • I’ve started using veno-compressor technologies this time for my recovery. I was already using the quads and R2. I still don’t have a clear understanding of how much they will help me. I’m sleeping with them every day. I will have some more feedback next week’s  :).
Full Legs, my new pajama :)

Next important race previous to the marathon is the Barcelona Half marathon. It’s the first time I decide to ran ½ marathon as a previous test for the marathon.  Will see how it goes.

More stuff in the next entry (hopefully, before the Barcelona Half Marathon).

Have fun running!!!
